Let’s Talk Streaming: Pros and Cons

Hey everyone and welcome to a world where Donald Trump isn’t President anymore. It’s crazy how much has gone on in the last year, and I can speak for nearly everyone when I say that it’s been hard to figure out what life even means anymore. What direction should we take? What do we even want to do with our lives? I can at least offer this to some of you. If you wanted to pivot your lifestyle into gaming and streaming, even if it’s only as a hobby, stick around.

In this article I’m going to be lightly going over the pros and cons of streaming. There will be some sub-articles later on delving deep into each topic, such as where you should consider streaming and with what equipment.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the benefits and drawbacks of dedicating yourself to streaming.

Benefits:

  1. Streaming can be a very fun, and sometimes lucrative, way to share your hobby with the masses. If you enjoy video games and think you’re interesting or good enough to be watched playing them, you’ve at least got a shot at successful streaming.
  2. If you can pull a consistent viewership, you can make revenue. And successful streams can pivot into having a successful YouTube account filled with clips from your streams.
  3. Scheduling consistency is a must with streaming. If you need some structure in your life or simply prefer to create your own schedule, this won’t be an issue for you. As long as you figure out (with the help of some analytics) what time your stream of choice will thrive most in, you’ve got a pretty clear cut schedule laid out for you to follow.
  4. VERSATILITY. Think about all the different streams you see nowadays. Even if you aren’t a gamer, fret not. People aren’t exclusively interested in video games. There are cooking streams, lifestyle streams, trading card pack opening streams, ASMR stream, mukbang streams (for y’all hungry folks), and so much more. As long as you know people might be interested in your hobby/activity (or if you believe that you can garner attention despite the lack of an existing viewership/community), go for it! What do you really have to lose?

Drawbacks:

  1. Just as consistency is a benefit to streaming, it is also a potential drawback. Let’s face it, sometimes it’s hard to force yourself to follow your daily routines. Sometimes you don’t feel like working or doing your weekly chores. This sentiment can easily transfer to your streaming, especially since you’re technically self employed. Diligence and perseverance are a must, however, because viewership will not come to you overnight. If you really want to make it, hang in there. You’re going to need to be at this for some time to get the results you want. So don’t quit your day job off rip, give it time. Like a sapling you’ve just planted. A tree doesn’t get to be fifty feet tall in a day.
  2. Competition is possibly the largest drawback to streaming. For any given popular game there’s probably dozens of successful and popular streamers, not to mention the hundreds and sometimes thousands who are trying to be. Don’t expect to get impressive viewership off the bat if you jump into a saturated market. I know it’s easier to get into the groove with a game you already know and love, but you must consider focusing on the future as well. Some games have yet to come out, but will be insanely popular when they do. This applies to all other forms of streaming too. Definitely consider looking into niche markets with high potential and a small community of dedicated streamers. The rest is up to you.
  3. Personally, I think another large drawback is your content itself. I’m not saying that you, the reader, have bad content. What I am saying is that you should do research and see how other people arrange the content in their streams, as well as how their personalities play into their content. Some streamers are loud and obnoxious, but people eat that shit up if they’re relatively harmless. Other streamers go for V-Tubing, which is essentially using an animation in place of their physical self and only using their real voice. Decide what you’re comfortable with, and truly consider whether or not your normal persona will fit into the market.
  4. Versatility is another double edged sword. While it benefits many streamers to have an arsenal of games to play and stream, some communities love a dedicated streamer. Some people watch a streamer for a specific game or activity, and that’s it. They don’t want any other content than the content they originally subscribed for. This can lead to you losing viewership if you’re not aware of that. My suggestion? interact with your viewers in the stream chat and on social media. Host some Q&A’s to decide what level you should be taking your streams to. Your community will become your source of income as well as your source of success. Always reflect off of them. Don’t forget that you aren’t streaming for yourself.

Just keep this in mind. Streaming is not an easy job. It may seem easy at a glance, but there is tons of analytics, logistics, experimentation, and sheer will that go into it. You may not find success in it, and that’s okay. But if you have any semblance of confidence in your chances, go for it.

Remember, these are just my personal views on the benefits and drawbacks of streaming, so they may not apply to everyone.
