This Week, In Dragon Ball FighterZ

ESPORTSREPORTER.COM / DANTE SRILAPA – SENIOR EDITOR  / JANUARY 11th, 2020 /

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the loss of a beautiful soul. A wholesome, pure old man. A gentle spirit, who guided young men to a life of peace and abstinence from war. He would have never hurt a fly, and he would have never, EVER objectified a woman. Yes…ladies and gentlemen…we are here to celebrate the life of Master Roshi. May he rest in peace.

Yeah right. We’re gathered here today to laugh at his death. If you mained or pocketed Roshi in FighterZ up until today, I don’t feel bad. I do not feel bad at all. In fact, your boy UI Goku should’ve got a nerf dart to the forehead too. But that’s for another time. There’s a lot to get into, but I wanted to just rub that one in first. Rest in pieces old man.

So big news! Super Baby Vegeta 2 will be releasing this week in FighterZ on Friday, January 15th. If you own the season pass, congratulations! You will be getting him two days earlier, on Wednesday the 13th. In case you didn’t get a chance to see his trailer, I’ll be giving a detailed breakdown before his initial release, so stay tuned. However, I will be briefly discussing my thoughts on the character. And to that effect, what do I think about Super Baby 2?

I think he’s my newest main.

This dude looks insane without being inherently broken, and that’s something you love to see in FighterZ. I think we can all agree that the DLC characters in this game are either inherently busted and Top 5 on the tier lists on release, or they’re hot dog water and barely match up to even the free characters. I’m looking at you Videl, with your stupid ass spot dodge. You make me sick.

Sorry, I got a little sidetracked. Anyways, Baby Vegeta’s kit doesn’t look broken. He isn’t without flaws. However, he has certain features (such as a boomerang ki-blast) that will force players to really adapt their defensive play. In addition, he can use the Z-Assists of the most recently deceased enemy against them, increasing his mix-up and combo potentials. It’s pretty wild. All in all, I can’t wait to break this character down, and I definitely cannot wait to add him to my team.

Moving on, let’s talk about the most recent balance patch, and what it could mean for the meta moving forward.

All in all, it was a pretty boring patch. Ya know, until you click the image on the top right and release the competitive scene has just completely pivoted with a few sentences. Master Roshi’s Martial Spirit, and subsequently his B-Assist, have been nerfed into the ground. Not only does the invincibility on the move (in either form) have a decreased duration, but the assist no longer has insane pressure nor insane handholding. It doesn’t even connect on block anymore. Why would you ever play around that assist anymore when you could just use Bardock’s B-Assist, or UI Goku’s A-Assist. By the way, as happy as I am about Roshi’s demise…don’t even get me started on UI Goku. That’ll just ruin my good mood.

With these changes, he loses his viability for those who place him on their team for his B-Assist and for those who used to have comfort in knowing that they could win dumb trades by mashing Martial Spirit when no other character would have been safe. Don’t get me wrong, the character is still pretty good. His kit didn’t revolve around Martial Spirit or his B-Assist, but this will more than likely alter his play-rate in the top levels of FighterZ. But again, I’m not at all sorry. That move can burn in hell. However, we don’t know exactly how this will pan out. The top level players have been known to be Guardians of the Secret Sauce, so perhaps they will find ways to resuscitate him.

So there you have it, Roshi has finally died of old age. To be fair, however, we don’t know exactly how this will pan out. The top level players have been known to be Guardians of the Secret Sauce, so perhaps they will find ways to resuscitate him. Let’s just hope that isn’t the case.

On the other hand, Super Baby 2 drops this week, so that’s something to get excited for. Wait, I think there’s a joke in there somewhere. Right? About an old man and a baby. Get it? Because Roshi is an old man and Baby Vegeta is named Baby, although he isn’t really a baby. He’s actually a toddler or a young child if anything, and he took over Vegeta who definitely isn’t…

You know what, I’m gonna stop. I’ll leave you with this image that sums up my mood today after reading the patch notes.
