Why is Sleep Streaming a Thing on Twitch?

Sleep streaming is just what it sounds like; live streaming on Twitch while you’re… sleeping. No, really.

The trend of sleeping on stream originally started picking up in 2018-2019, although it has been around longer. It really picked up when a streamer and YouTuber earned $16,000 during a “sleep stream.” Making money while you’re sleeping sounds pretty rad. Of course, if it sounds too good to be true… you know.

Streamers don’t always legitimately sleep on stream. During a $16,000 sleep-stream, one streamer had text to voice on his stream–so his views just went wild, having the text to voice bark at him, set off Alexa, joke that someone was watching him from his window, etc. With music going off for every notification and demands coming through your chat, you’d have to be a rock to sleep through any of it.

That doesn’t mean people don’t actually sleep on stream, though. If you just search through the “just chatting” section on Twitch, especially on the weekends and at night, you’ll see cams of people sleeping in bed or on their couch. The majority are shirtless guys. I don’t know many girls that would risk it, to be honest.

So should you sleep on stream? Could you earn money by doing nothing?

Let’s be real. The only people making money for sleeping (or pretending to sleep) are people who are already established on Twitch. Or those lucky enough to be visited by other streamers and YouTubers randomly donating to make their own content. If Ninja streamed while he slept, he could get thousands of dollars. But for average or new streamers, the best you’re looking to wake up to is some rude messages and some “I know where you live now” jokes.

It’s also weirdly intimate. If you want to be a figure on Twitch, as in a streamer with a following, a lot of your everyday life will be tracked and recorded. Influencers and streamers often talk about their struggle with separating their real life from their public persona. Adding in a sleep stream for a few extra bucks may not be worth it if you do eventually gain a following. It would mean that every single second of your life is recorded, even when you’re sleeping to recover from it.

No one can stop you from sleep streaming unless Twitch changes its rules, though. For now, sleep streaming is completely allowed, even for Twitch Partners and verified channels.
